The demise of another syndicate company

Having seen the demise of OwnerShips in the press, it may make you think twice about entering a fractional ownership scheme. But then again, you should think twice and ensure any scheme you have an interest in is secure for your investment. This was also the case when Challenger went bust previously.

There are two main areas, ownership of the vessel and your management fees. Always ensure you own the boat. It may sound obvious, but is it your name on the documents or that of a company? If a company, what rights do you have over the ownership of the company itself? All monies paid to the management company should go to an account specifically for the boat and not the bank account of the managment co.. The money will then be safe should the managemnet company go under.

The answer is simple - in order to provide 100% security should anything go wrong, no financing whatsoever can be allowed on any boat at any time. These include the low owner to yacht ratio, guaranteed time allocations in weekly slots, free no hassle swopping of allocations between owners, open book policy and monthly accounts available and sent to all owners.

Matriculation Tax!

Many owners in Spain and The Balearics are being caught out by the Spanish authorities taking action over yachts that are registered for charter. If your yacht is over 15m and you do charter it, even for just 1 day, you will be liable for the tax.
